Teaser (2) - Elemental Killers #2

As promised here is a second teaser from Elemental Killers #2! I will be holding a cover reveal soon and I can't wait for that as this is my favourite cover of the series.

His arms were still tensed at his side as he spoke.
"Come and find me later Kai, when you have cooled down properly. I need to be on my own for a bit." I turned to leave and thankfully I could only hear silence behind me, indicating Kai had listened. However, I only got a few steps before someone walked into the doorway, a smug grin plastered on her face.
"Aww is there trouble in paradise? I would say I'm sorry to hear that but I would be lying. The truth is I'm ecstatic to hear it." The woman laughed and started walking closer towards us. I didn't hear Kai move until he was beside me, placing a hand on my shoulder.

"Oh great and I thought my day couldn't get any worse..." I muttered under my breath and I heard Kai chuckle slightly.

Books I'm Excited to Read

Now I have a lot more time on my hands I actually have time to both read and write. My 'to be read pile' has grown and grown over the last few months where I have been ordering new releases but have not been able to commit the time to read them. That's about to change though and I'm so excited to finally be able to finish certain series, start new ones and continue reading others! Here are some of the books at the top of my 'to be read pile' that I can't wait to start.

Angel Fever (Angel Trilogy 3) - L. A. Weatherly
I've been waiting for this since I finished Angel Fire last year! So glad it was released early and I loved it. One of the best endings to a series I have read in a while!

July Writing Playlist

My music changes a lot while writing and like I've mentioned in a previous post 'The Influence of Music' it has a big impact on the mood I'm in when writing. It can either help or hinder the writing process depending on whether or not it fits with the scene. I'm always on the look out for new music, especially instrumental, as I find that works best for me so here are my favourite finds this month and the most frequently played while I am writing.

Finest Hour -.Submotion Orchestra
Think this is one of my new favourites in general actually, it's just beautiful.

Lower Your Eyelids To Die With The Sun - M83

Starwaves (Oblivion Soundtrack) - M83

Injection - Hans Zimmer (Mission Impossible 2 Soundtrack)
One of my all time favourite composers - his music is just brilliant.

Running After My Fate Instrumental (The Divide Soundtrack) - Jean Pierre-Taieb

Arrival Of The Birds & Transformation - The Cinematic Orchestra

Lost In Timeless Horizons - Nyctalgia

I am forever finding new music to listen to so my playlist changes frequently. This is just a select few but there are plenty more I use when writing or just to relax to really.

Meet the Characters (2) - An Interview with Kai

I am delighted to have Kai Seevers with me today! After hearing from Serena I felt it was imperative to hear his side of the story too and I'm glad he accepted the invitation. Everyone please give a warm welcome to Kai!

Interviewer: Hi Kai, thank you for agreeing to talk to us today and letting me be the first to interview you. Could you tell the readers a little about yourself?

Kai: Hi everyone. Firstly, you have Rea to thank for me being here, she can be incredibly persuasive when she wants to be…normally I will avoid the press at all costs, although you probably already know that due to previous experiences. There isn’t really much I can tell you about myself without it becoming a national security risk though. My work is highly confidential and therefore not meant to be spoken about in public.

Interviewer: Don’t worry about that Kai, I can assure you I already know what your job entails so it’s fine to discuss it with me.

Kai: You might know but your readers will not and therefore I am not allowed to discuss it. How did you find out anyway?

Interviewer: Never mind that Kai, it’s not important. How about we stay away from the topic of your job and focus on other things then? You recently helped turn Rea’s world upside down when you entered her life, do you have any regrets about that?

Kai: [Sigh] I guess a part of me does and a part of me doesn’t. I hate watching her go through the things she is right now and wish there was another way but she was already beginning to get involved in this life before I came along. I do feel grateful that I found her though as I was able to give her the answers she needed before she could get into more danger by looking for them.

Interviewer: It seems like you really care about her, how far would you go to protect her?

Kai: I thought my actions so far would speak for themselves. I would do anything to make sure she is safe not only because of my feelings towards her but for reasons I am unable to discuss due to the classified nature of the facts.

Interviewer: Yes, you certainly have proved that you would do anything for her. Can you elaborate on what your feelings for Rea are?

Kai: I would prefer not to if that’s alright, she knows everything she needs to and I would rather not talk about our relationship in public.

Interviewer: Right…Is it fair to say you can handle most problems that are thrown your way?

Kai: I would like to think so but in the world we are living in everything is unpredictable and therefore more deadly. Yes I am trained, but I can only protect people from things if I know how to deal with them. Sometimes the outcome isn’t what I would hope for but most events are out of my control.

Interviewer: Well, fortunately for you Kai that is all I have time for. Once again thank you for allowing me to interview you and good luck with your job and Rea.

I have been toying with the idea of retiring a few of my books for the past month or so as I haven't been happy with them. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I don't think they represent my skills as a writer to their full potential so today I have finally done it. The Sheol and The Flawless in The Wanderer Trilogy are no longer available to purchase (they may take a few weeks to come off B&N, Sony, Kobo etc).

I'm not saying they will never be published again but after completing two books in the Elemental Killers series I think they are more along the lines of what I want to write and show off my skills better. I mean The Sheol was my first ever book and even though I am proud of it I feel it needs some work to get it to the standard of Deadly to Love.

I thank everyone who reviewed it, bought it and told me they enjoyed it. I'm glad you did and I appreciate the warm welcome with the publication of it! I'm just a bit of a perfectionist and although a lot of you guys told me you love it, it has been bugging me. There is stuff I want to add and change to hopefully make it better as I believe I am growing as a writer and finding my feet more.

I will re-write it somewhere in the near future and will let you all know when it's back up :)

Happy Reading!

Meet the Characters - An Interview with Serena

Today I am delighted that my leading female, Serena Jackson, has been able to take time about of her busy life of fighting Elementals to talk to me. Having started editing Elemental Killers #2 and planning book 3 I have spoken to her about the events in Deadly to Love. So everyone please give a warm welcome to Serena!

Interviewer: Hi Serena thanks for agreeing to let me interview you today, I know you’re really busy and probably have a lot on your plate right now. Is there a name you prefer to go by and would you like to tell the readers a little about yourself?

Serena: Hi, it’s no problem! Interviews make a nice change from the usual chaos in my life right now to be honest. Yeah, so I’m Serena, although most people call me Rea. I find it really hard to talk about myself at the moment…I’m finding out I have been kept in the dark about who I am all of my life and this has obviously led me to question a lot of things. I haven’t totally wrapped my head around the facts yet so it’s a struggle to say a lot.

Interviewer:  That’s totally understandable after what you have been through. How did you deal with it when you found out about the whole new world that had been in front of you all of your life but just out of reach?

Serena: Well, I’m the type of person who doesn’t like people to see me have a meltdown so I tried to appear calm and collected. That was not the case if you were inside my head at the time though. I’m not sure how I dealt with it really, I guess you just have to take it a day at the time and I mean, it’s not like I had a choice in the matter, the life chose me so you kind of just cope in those kinds of situations.

Interviewer:  I think we’ve all been there, trying to put on a calm façade when really we are a mess inside. It must be tough to try and keep up that façade when around your loved ones.

Serena: I’m lucky in a way, I only have to wear a mask when around my friends and family – which doesn’t seem to be very often right now – so it takes the pressure off. When I am around Kai I can be myself and he actually expects me to freak out about this new world and lifestyle. I’m not sure whether to take that personally as I don’t get scared that easily but overall he has been great.

Interviewer:  Well I wasn’t going to bring up your relationship with Kai…but since you mentioned him, why don’t you tell us a little about him?

Serena: Um… Well a lot of things with Kai are very hush-hush so if you’re looking for any gossip I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed. Like I said before, he’s been great throughout this whole ordeal. He’s a shoulder to cry on, protects me and a genuine person who seems to care about people a lot, despite the act he puts on for people.

Interviewer:  So how would you describe your relationship with Kai? I’ve heard he’s a guy every girl would dream about dating.

Serena: [Sigh] I knew I shouldn’t have mentioned him, I do that a lot, think before I speak. Um… I enjoy spending time with Kai but we aren’t rushing anything. He’s there for me no matter what and we are just taking things a day at a time.

Interviewer:  Would you say you love him then?

Serena: [Blushes profusely] Erm, well….I’m a bit young to be talking about love right? He’s there for me when I need him and he is someone I would trust with my life. I’ve been through too much and don’t know what I feel about anything right now though.

Interviewer:  Sounds like you have deep feelings for him, are you sure you couldn’t say that it’s love?

Serena: Oh, would you look at the time. I’m sorry, it has been great talking to you but I’m going to have to rush off, I have an important meeting that I really can’t be late for [leaves room blushing]

Interviewer:  Well Serena seems to have left the building already so I guess that’s the end of the interview and I’ll leave you to make your own minds up about their relationship.

Teaser - Elemental Killers #2

I have been busy going through Elemental Killers #2 and re-drafting it this week. I think I have just about reached the point where I am happy with the narrative so all that's left now is the editing.

Also because I have refreshed my memory of the plot I have been able to plan book 3 and will be starting to write that soon. I have decided editing will be my day job and I will be writing from about 11pm onward as this is the best time for me.

Anyway, because I'm happy with the narrative and can't wait to share the book with you all, I thought I would give you guys a brief teaser with the promise of more throughout the month! So I'll stop rambling now and let you read.

*If you do notice any mistakes please excuse them - this is from an unedited copy *

I glanced up at him but he wasn't looking at me so I continued. "I didn't know what it was at first so every time it happened it scared and confused me. That’s why I’ve been jumpy." I sighed and finally he looked up.
"That doesn't sound like a good thing..." He reached over and pulled me towards him.
"Which bit, the part where I'm hearing voices and seeing spirits or the fact that they are telling me it's not safe?"
"Well I've always know you were crazy so I guess it's the latter of the two."
I swiped at his arm and he laughed, grabbing me around the waist, pulling me closer for a  kiss.
"I’m not crazy, well I guess I am a little. I mean I am dating you and I followed you all the way here without many questions. I've also got myself in the middle of a war with paranormal beings and when you say that out loud it does sound pretty weird." I frowned at my words, for the first time thinking about what I was doing.
"You're not crazy Rea and we'll get through this together. When do you want to go back to training?" He hugged me tighter against his chest and I melted into his strong arms, basking in the reassurance they brought.

"In a minute, I just got comfy."

Happy Reading!

Ideas Lead to Insomnia

Yes, I am once again not getting any sleep due my crazy writing time of 11pm - 3am.

Now that I have finished college and exams, I am left with a year off and nothing to do but write! I have taken a break from editing and writing for a couple of weeks (I think I deserved one after having no social life for the past 5 months) but I'm getting back into things finally.

Of cours,e while I am editing I am also planning Elemental Killers #3 so this means my head is constantly full of ideas that I am trying to weave into the book and therefore, I am awake until the early hours of the morning as I just can't switch off...

I have been told numerous times that I have an incredibly overactive imagination. Something that becomes most evident once I have watched a horror movie or read a scary novel and I’m lying awake for hours - because I have freaked myself out envisioning the characters are real. I must admit at this point it doesn’t seem like such a good thing to have, however when generating ideas for new books it comes in handy and I find myself lying awake due to all of the ideas in my head rather than fear.

The initial ideas for my books have various ways of coming about. Some are taken from dreams I have had while others are based on real life experiences. These two things normally only generate the main genre or theme of the novel though, for example in Deadly to Love I had the initial thought of a modern day romance but I wanted the main characters to meet in a different way that broke the stereotypical college romance. As well as this I also wanted a paranormal element which led me into some fun research.

However, because Elemental Killers #3 is a continuation of the series, the characters, world and general outline for the story is already there and I don't have to do all that again. I may have a few new characters to create but most of my sleep deprivation comes from the frequent 'eureka' moments that start off as a small addition about where I can take the book, before snowballing as one thing leads to the next.

I get excited by the smallest idea which leads to my brain starting up again and if that happens there's no hope for me. Also, I have found that I will never get to sleep if I don’t write these down as I'm thinking about not forgetting it so much. Doing this then to leads onto another idea though so either way I'm not going to sleep.

This is what is happening with Elemental Killers #3 right now and as well as this I have the final book, and a new story I can't wait to write crammed into my head. I'm not complaining though as this it what I love and now that I have a year off these crazy nights don't have such a negative effect in the morning due to lie ins!
