About

#1 Amazon bestselling author Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading, loves anything romantic, and has an overactive imagination that keeps her up until the early hours of the morning.

Mia has written over ten titles including her Seasons of Change series, the Chequered Flag series, the Elemental Killers series, and her standalone novels False Finder and Not Enough.

Her favourite genres are contemporary romance or romantic suspense, and with an ever growing list of ideas she is trying to keep up with the speed at which her imagination generates them. She also designs book covers on her website M Designs.

FAQs

Q: Where do you get your ideas from?

A: All I can say to this is that I have very weird dreams... and because of this I always sleep with a notebook by the side of my bed so I can jot down ideas as I wake up but other than that, occasionally something happens which conjures ideas or I use my own experiences but these are more helpful in developing plot lines rather than the initial idea.

Q: Why Do You Write?

A: It's hard to put into word why I write but mostly it is because it is my passion and brings me happiness. I enjoy getting lost in my own worlds and being able to tell a story.

I answered this question in more depth in an article called Why I Write on here: http://miahoddell.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/why-i-write.html

Q:Who are your favorite authors?
A: I read too many books to pick just one. I can read one to two books a day when in the right mood so it’s needless to say I own a lot of books. If you forced me to pick one I would probably have to say Julia Golding as if I hadn’t found her book I probably wouldn’t have started reading or writing as neither interested me up until that point. I also love Derek Landy’s work as he is a humorous author. I’ll stop there, before I get carried away…

Q: Do you ever get writer’s block? What do you do when it happens?
A:
I don’t so much as get writer’s block, it’s more of a feeling of whether I really want to write that day. Sometimes I find I’m just not in the mood to think so I’ll either go for a run to clear my head or do photography for a bit. Even when I’m in that mood I will always work on something to do with my writing, whether that is my blog, marketing or designing though.

Q: What Genres Do You Write?
A: Mostly I write YA/NA Paranormal or Romance books, but that may change in the future. It all depends on what idea won't leave me alone.

Q: Other Than Writing What Else Do You Love?
A: I love reading, acting, photography, sports (although I don’t have much time to play competitively anymore) and anything creative.

I also design book covers on my website M Designs

Q: How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
A: The first book I wrote took me three years as I had to balance it with exams, college etc. but now all of that is out of the way I have been able to complete a first draft in just under a month.

Q:.Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?
A: For all my main characters I write a character plan. I include in this, their height, build, looks, colouring, personality, age, clothes and many other things. I find that the more detailed this plan is, the easier it is to keep them the same throughout the book.

Q: Do you offer review copies?
A: Generally, I contact those I would like to review my books. I have a big mailing list of bloggers and offer ARCs and review copies around the time of release via sign up forms. Signing up to my mailing list gives you the greatest chance to receive information first as I do limit the copies I send out. If there isn't a form live then it usually means I'm not sending copies out. However, I will make exceptions for well-established reviewers/bloggers.

The most common reasons I decline requests are:
1) Not enough information is provided with the request. If I can't see a review history, I will more than likely decline.
2) The book you request is selling at a low price. I try to price my books reasonably, and although I'd love to give everyone a copy for free, I can't. Please remember this is my job so it's not feasible. If people don't buy my work, I cannot continue to publish.

To give yourself the best chance, sign up to my mailing list to be notified first and then include plenty of information.
